New owner. Question re Key Tag
I’ve just bought my first Volvo (XC40 T5 ‘68 plate) and I have a question.
I have the two main key fobs and they work fine. I have also found the small KEY TAG (or sports key) that appears to be unused in the original box in the centre console. The tag key does not appear to work. I’ve left it in the car and unlocked using the main key fob but it really appears to be dead when I try it on its own to unlock or lock the car. Would the battery be drained (new in Nov 2018)? I’ve read the battery cannot be replaced. I’ve seen new ones offered on eBay for £24 but surely they would need to be coded to my vehicle? I’ve heard a new one from my Volvo dealer could be £120. Any advice for a new owner appreciated. Thanks. |

Hi
If you do a search on here, I believe others have previously carefully cut the fob open, replaced the battery and glued the case back together. The key fob is then usable but not guaranteed to be waterproof!!

As long as you are not worried about it being waterproof any more then you can use a fine bladed scalpe or craft k ife to repeatedly cut around the outside joint untill you can pry it open once open you can unsolder the original battery and re solder a replacement in.
The battery is a CR2032-PCN2 this has the legs you can bend in and solder. You can get them for about £3. Then just glue back together with a few spots of superglue. I did mine a couple of weeks ago, it works perfectly now. If I need it to be waterproof I will stick it in a zip lock bag. It's so much more convenient to have in your pocket than the big key. |

If you have access to a 3D printer here's a replacement case designed by a fellow Volvo owner on swedespeed: https://www.printables.com/model/449...placement-case

See below. Used to be supplied as standard with certain trims - but now an optional accessory- a buttonless key-fob for keyless entry/start, waterproof and limited-life (integrated battery) widget that I really loved and almost exclusively used with my first SPA-gen car - but have learned to live without when I got my current XC40. Not a must-have definitely, but certainly a nice-to-have.
