Default Thumping noise slowly moving forward

Hi All. I have an 05 plate V70 with 86k mileage and an auto box. On starting to move away when cold I get a thumping noise from the front which is gradually getting worse. My local garage who I trust can find nothing worn on the drive or suspension and suspect, all though they dont know, the gearbox. I had it in with main Volvo dealers last week for a gearbox "rinse" fluid change but that doesn't seem to have made much difference. i didn't mention the thumping at the time but they also made no comment about it when I collected from them. Given these comments do you feel it is gearbox wear? Perhaps in the first instance I go back to the main dealer for their opinion but it would be useful to have some background knowledge first if you have any views. Just a thought could this be the "axle ping" I have read about. Thankyou.

Sorry to steal the thread, but how much did they charge you for that rinse change?
Unfortunately I have no idea about the noise you are talking about and to be honest I can't really understand what is....anyway, did you check an exhaust ?

Have you checked your tyres for blebs in the tread area? I can't think of anything else that you could call a thump when moving off.

Does the noise keep repeating as the car is rolling?

Does the car do it just at 1st start up, or everytime you come to a standstill, then set off. It could be the ABS self checking if it does it at initial start up.

If this were a Subaru forum then the thump would be normal, they all have 'boxer' engines..

Rinse at main Volvo dealers was £176 including oil and VAT. I expected about that amount from what I had read before. Axle bolts checked and are ok. Next check on gearbox mounting. It tends to appear worse when first setting off in the morning but is not as loud when car warmed up. No sound when driving normally or at speed. It appears louder when just pulling away slowly out of the drive. Pulling away with abit more power seems to lessen the thump. A puzzle!!! Thanks for replies. When found I will post again.
