That message is not a 'service interval reminder', it's a message generated by a fault code which will need reading and clearing after a likely repair.

Most garages and certainly a Volvo workshop will be able to read the codes and action the required remedy.

Question

Just re-read your original request, you mention that a service has just been done by a non-Volvo garage, did it include an oil change, is your XC90 a D5?

If so and if they have filled the oil to the maximum mark on the dipstick, it's too much and from memory I think it will trigger the 'Engine Sysyem Service' message!

That's correct. The oil level needs to be about 2 marks below maximum, otherwise your message appears.
