Exclamation HID Gas Discharge Unit, S60 R, HELP!!

Folks, noticed my passenger side dipped beam is away, - it dont look like it is the bulb, as it does come on from time to time when it likes, the bulb appears to be ok, however i have been informed the "Starter" or the Gas discharge unit as volvo appears to call it, is the problem. i have looked into prices and i've been told £280 just for the part!! - never mind fitting!

i cant have my car like this can you help? anyone know where i could get one at a better price?

im shocked at the cost!!

kind regards, and thanks in advance for any help!

Rit.

I would swap the bulb from the other side first to eliminate the possibility of it being the bulb , i had this problem with a Bi-Xeon on a S40 and it was the bulb ...

Thumbs up

i see,

i may take it to a mechanic friend for this. the head lights are marked with Danger! 25,000 volts! - so i dont wanna play around too much! are these the same units that are in the s40? - im not sure if they are? but i will keep this in mind!

regards,
R.

There are only 3 compenents to a Xenon (HID) light;
1.Starter this is located behind the bulb.
2.bulb.
3.Ballast or control unit , this is usually found under the headlight unit.

Do as said earlier, swop the bulbs side to side and then swop the starter side to side to see if the fault follows.
As long as the current is off there will be no problem handling the units.
When the fault has been diognosed, spares can be found cheaper.
one site that sells 2nd hand ballasts and starters is http://www.hids4u.co.uk/hid-ballasts-starters-c-3.html.
Roughly about 1/2 price if you use vat free as coupon in their checkout another 15% is achieved.
best of luck.
They are only as scary as you let them be
