Exclamation Electris speedo, wire colours!

Hello everyone, jusr a quick question to help me with me speedo conversion, on the electric speedo there is a plug with 3 wires, BLUE, BLACK, RED/black stripe.

The blue goes the the rear axel, the black is earth, what does the red/black one do or go, I've traced it to the ignition switch, then it goes to somewhere else, but the end has been cut off, is this just an ignition power supply?

Please Help chaps,!!!!

Sounds likely, but i really can't help any more than to say if you've got a workshop manual check the wiring diagram. It's a pain in proverbial but better to be sure! Are you converting from cable to electric speedo?

All the best

Can't help you with the wire colours as I'm stuck on a rig in the middle of the North Sea! However I can confirm that if your speedo head and axle are from the same car you should be OK. I recently put a GLT engine into my Torslanda. As the GLT engine had the older mechanical injection I decided to swap the loom over as well to get rid off all the Jetronic nonsense. Both looms had the same wires and plugs but there was no way that the speedo was going to work. Once the GLT axle was also swapped over everything fine.

Default speedo wiring

Hello Andi, according to my Haynes book for 1986 on models WIRING DIAGRAM the speedo appears to have 4 wires on it ! Black & Blue wires go to sender unit on axle. Red / Black goes to ignition switch, also to voltage regulator & dash lights, so this is a live feed to the unit from fuse 12, also goes to fuel pump relay. Fourth wire (also blue) goes to the "shift indicator control unit"
However, the CHAPTER ON REAR AXLE diagram shows only 3 wires. Blue & Black to axle sensor, black shown as earth. Red/ black to ignition switch terminal 15.

Confusing or what ?
By the way, where are you moving to ? Hopefully not too far so we can still see you at the Nottingham meetings, next one March 7th.

regards, Richard.
