V70 D5 euro4 Camshaft drive belt tensioner.
I've just changed the cambelt, idler and tensioner on my son's 06 v70, whilst there I also changed the alternator belt and pulleys.
I can't get my head round the tensioner for the cam belt, the haynes manual shows it in various positions at differing temperatures and, as it was 35 celsius today I set the tensioner about half way between the position haynes shows for 20 celsius and 50 celsius. Subsequently the thought crossed my mind that the tensioner may automatically compensate for temperature. So my query is was I right first time or should I just have set it in the mid position. FWIW when I took the cover off the indicator was pointing at the 0 celsius position(with the old belt fitted) I haven't run it since fitting the belts, though I have rotated it several turns and the marks all lined up, as I've removed the egr system to give it a good clean and check out the servomotor.

On a cold engine and at this time of year, I would set it at the 20°C mid point then torque up the bolt.

The needle does indeed compensate for temperature, but consider that at the most left position it corresponds to some -25C (and cold engine), while the most right position is for a hot engine (around 80C or so).
So as above, I would wait for the next morning for a milder outside temperature (25c or so) and set it right in the middle. You may have troubles adjusting it this second time, it may get rebellious: if the needle moves to the right when the bolt is tightened, just set the needle more to the left so it moves at the center when the bolt is tightened. Remember, at each try do the whole complete procedure all over again https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-qhJ8Vjhu8

Thanks for that info, I'll reset it in the mid position.

Took the cambelt cover off before the rain started this a.m. and to my surprise the indicator was just on the low side of the mid position so I didn't reset it as it was nearly 20 degrees cooler, when I originally set it up, the bonnet had been open and facing into the sun and the parts were hot to my hands so I'm a happy bunny now, just 18 degrees at 0730 this am.
Meant to say I turned it a few more revs today, compression is excellent and feels the same on all 5 cylinders but that's just a subjective measurement, reassuring though. I'm renewing all the gaskets on the turbo charge pipe as one is that slimy it's popped out of the union, no wonder my boy was complaining of no power. I also fitted a refurbed egr and cooler with a working servomotor on, the original one smells like burnt bakelite.
