gear stick gaitor 1969 121 replacing
The gear stick gaitor is split on my 120. Went to sit the new after removing the floor covering and found that I have to remove a plastic/rubber cover over the grea box tunnel.
How do you remove this tunnel cover? I slackened the screw by the seat belt mount but made no difference. Any advice welcome. Thanks Jim C |

Hi Jim C
I do belive that is all there is holding it in place, there is a rubber bit that conects it to the heater but that should not hold it in place, it may have been stuck down by a previous owner, let us know how you get on. |

Are you sure that the plastic cover has to be removed? When I replaced the gearlever gaiter on my car a while ago, I'm sure that I just pushed the end of the new one into the aperture (being rubber, the gaiter should spring back into shape).

If you do need to remove the plastic heater duct which runs along the prop shaft tunnel you have to remove the small screw at the end and then lift the tunnel off. What does happen is that with time the plastic duct sticks to the anti drumming felt that is stuck to the metal of the tunnel. This is what happened to me, you have to pull up really hard and it will finaly just give.

You don't need to remove the plastic air duct to replace the gaiter, but you might need to jack the car up and get underneath to pull the gaiter through and make sure it is seating properly. Fumes can get in here if it's not seating properly.

Thanks everyone for your advice. Sprayed the gaitor with WD40 and gave it a wobble and twist and got it in no problems. Driven the car and it is alot quiete. Just get on with the next job which will be fitting the rear seat belts.
Many thanks Jim C |
