Default LEZ info for an old V40

We are getting a LEZ in Glasgow very soon and as we have an old V40 1.8l automatic in the family, we had assumed it would be banned.

The car was first registered in late 2002 so has 52 plate. The registration document says emissions are 208g per something. The annual VED is quite high.

However, when entering the registration number into the number plate checkers for any of the UK LEZs, it says the car is compliant. Which is at odds with the general statement that a petrol car registered before 2005 will normally not be compliant, i.e. not Euro 4.

The small print contains a get out, saying information given out may be incorrect.
The fine is £60 here, so we do not want to get it wrong.

How can we check whether the car is compliant or not?

Ignore the pre 2005 info. My V40 is not compliant, yet the C70 is. 2.4 petrol turbo.

What does that mean for us?

Our daughter now owns this V 40, we gave it to her way back in 2008.

It has been a great car for her, and she loves it, has kept it going, mileage is about 90k. A few things need fixed, but nothing essential.

Unfortunately her office is about 100m inside the LEZ, where she has free bookable parking, but we can lend her a compliant car, but not ideal as it is a Smart car with 2 seats, and she has 2 children to deliver to nursery before going to work.

Would be great if the V 40 is actually compliant.

Really just want to know who we can contact to establish the correct facts re this car.

If the car is not compliant then she will not enter the zone, but this will be really inconveniant for her.

My late father's 2001 V40 1.8 (which is presently not roadworthy) appears to be compliant with the new Glasgow LEZ, whereas my 2003 V40 2.0, is not.
No idea why.

I've seen a few threads on this, where early 2000's petrol cars aren't clear.

There is another thread i think in the P2 V70 forum where a chap went on to a government website, it said his 2.4 V70 was ULEZ compliant, has subsequently received 3 fines...

A part of the confusion I think is that there is the ULEZ (ultra low emissions zone), LEZ's (low emissions zones) and Clean Air Zones. The latter seems to be more focused on diesel particulate emissions.

My 2003 C70 T5 is fine in Birmingham, my 2015 XC60 is not, despite it being a much cleaner car (from a global climate perspective) :-(

Yep, that is one of the checkers we used, also tried the Other Scottish ones and the English ones including the London ULEZ one and they all say the car is OK to use in them.

So if she drives to her office on the basis of this, then gets a fine, what can she do to challenge it?

We are wondering if this car could be a 2003 model, when do the model years change?

Everything on it is either original or replaced with Volvo parts as far as possible.

The radiator grille is the black one with vertical and horizontal bits, is that what is known as the egg crate grille? Does it give any clue as to what model year it is?

Your V40, being a 2002/52, is a phase 2 as are our two examples. I have just remembered, as my late father's is registered as 'disabled' tax class, this would likely be why it falls under LEZ exemption, whilst my 53 plate doesn't.

I've just found another registration number (for an S40 in Glasgow), I will try that in the LEZ checker and if it shows as not exempt, it will likely be the case that your V40 won't be exempt either.
