Yes - I have the glorified ring spanner: it works. It does the job and removes any worries of cracking the housing as well as making light work of a housing that seemed to have welded itself in place.

I was able to get mine off with a 32mm ring spanner; once you get a good purchase on the nut it cracks off easy, it's only meant to be done up to 15nm torque

Use the funny slotted ring spanner & slide as far up the filter as you can to avoid breaking the plastic .

Laser tools sell them , but you can find them on fleabay cheaper & just as good AND definately do not over tighten the bowl assy onto the filter head .

I struggled to remove a filter previously swapped by a weekend warrior type & failed to do so in spectacular fashion by sheering the bowl from it's threaded ring .

Result was a new filter assy costing £130 + messing around time extra on top of estimate

The seal apparently expands due to the diesel - that's why people think they were tightened by a gorilla. Chances are it was fitted hand tight or properly torqued but the expansion of the seal makes it much harder to undo. On mine, a 32 MM spanner wouldn't shift it - I could see the housing distort hence buying the proper tool which made light work.

The position of other components can make it difficult to get decent access with a spanner or socket - true a strap wrench or chain wrench can be used on multiple vehicles but on this occasion, just buy the right tool for the job or you may come to regret it.
