Default Volvo 140 vibration under acceleration

I have just had centre bearing (including rubber mount) and the rear u joint replaced on my 145 manual non o/d. As soon as I set of from the garage I noticed a significant vibration when accelerating under load/setting off. We got it back on the ramp and checked for play and tried tuning the prop 180 still nice luck. The only thing we can think of is that the missing spring in the bottom of the centre bearing carrier and the split along with the worn uj was somehow masking the vibration.

Anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks in advance

Default prop mounted correctly?

Hi David, check weather the propshaft was mounted correctly. The U-joints of each part should be in the same direction.

They look okay to me. The new rear uj is different to the front one though as it has a grease nipple on it (same as the old one). I've ordered the missing spring and washer for the centre mount, although Volvo don't list them anymore, we are hoping they are the same as the early 240.

To clarify that..... It is correct when fitted as follows -
The yoke on the front of the front section should be vertical. The one on the splined piece should be vertical and the one bolted to the axle should be vertical, If you plug in the centre one correctly all should be well. I don't say it will solve your problem but it will eliminate one possible factor.

Thanks, I think I understand. All the yokes definitely line up in the vertical position.

Under the years of dirt and underseal are two arrows stamped in the propshaft to indicate the correct assembly position , they should point towards each other .

I have the same problem. Had the 144 as a daily driver for 4 years now and the vibrations are horrible, they were there when I got it. On reading your query I just flipped mine through 180 degrees, it was slightly better, this is a job I planned to do a while back. If you search the forum you'll find my earlier post on this topic. My mechanic said it was worn splines, the people on this forum suggested otherwise. My bet is its a combination of slightly worn splines and improperly balanced prop. I'll let you know the results when I get it balanced.
