Loan vehicle insurance cover - a cautionary tale
When your insurance renewal comes around, check what your company will charge for temporary cover on any service loan vehicle.
Many specialist and smaller garages don't insure loaners, which leaves it up to the driver. A low initial premium can be increased substantially by charges of £25 per occasion; especially if you're a compulsive repairer or have a long-term problem that needs frequent visits. Chris Knott insurers were initially going to charge a £25 per visit levy on my Highway insurance policy until I pointed out that I had specifically asked if there would be any charge when I took the policy out, and was told that there would not be. It did involve a discussion with a manager on both occasions I had to get cover, but they did concede that my initial terms and conditions would apply. The lady I spoke to said that many insurers will do this, probably as way of clawing back the low initial premium that convinced you in the first place. Highway is one of them; be warned and make sure you do as I do and get it in the notes when you renew. Or take the loan vehicle charges into account when choosing your insurers. |

Very sound advice - something that is easily overlooked

Good advice!
That is at least one advantage of the main stealers. They at least give you a brand spanking new courtesy car with full insurance

Some do - mine used to do this but now I get a 'loan' car from Arnold's car hire department and need to pay for the insurance changes even yhough it is going down to a much smaller basic car.

They're not always brand new either...my local dealer in September last year had an 05 plate V50, and 04 and 03 plate S40s! (And if you use the bodyshop you get a Corsa 1.2! )
