Disctext
I have had my XC90 SE ( 05 plate ) now for 18 months and still not worked out how to get the disctext facility to work when playing CDs.
I have the option checked in the menu and have used various CDs including originals without success. Does anyone know how to get this to work? I can never remember which disc is which in the changer and without disctext I have to listen to every CD to get to the right one! It must be an age thing. Thanks in advance. John. |

I've noticed that it depends on the CD. I have some CDs that have it and some that don't, even though they are all originals.

It gets the information about artist, track, etc., from any CD-Text encoded on the CD (in the subcode data which also contains track number, track time, etc., if you're interested...)
Unfortunately, CD-Text never really took off, in that very few pre-recorded CDs have it. What I do is backup all my CDs on the computer to an mp3 or wma format. When you do this, most software (e.g. Windows audio player, Real audio) looks up a database online and works out the name of your disk and tracknames. You can then burn your music back in standard audio format onto a re-writeable CD (CD-RW) or a write once CD-R for use in the car (which also ensures the original doesn't get damaged). Unfortunately, lots of CD burner software doesn't write the CD - text. The only free one I'm aware of is Real Audio. So if you use this, you'll end up with a copy of your CD with all the track info, etc, displayed on your car. Bit convoluted I know! Also, in case you didn't know, re-recordable CD-RWs (as oposed to write-once CD-Rs) have a lower signal level on playback, which some older CD players can't cope with. The CD player in the XC90 (at least mine) is happy to play CD-RWs. Gerry |

Gerry,
Just downloaded Real Audio Player as you suggested and it works a treat. I am in the process of re-burning my favouite CDs so I can get disctext with all of them! Thanks again. |
