Bizarre electrical problem
One day I turned on the key to start the car and the dash lights came on, the running lights too. Weird! I tried turning on the running lights with the key off and the car's electrical system came on. Weird!
I've put up with this for weeks so I decided to dig into it. Spent several hours with the schematic and a meter. Tried pulling wires and fuses and finally got to the bottom of it. What was the cause? It was caused by two problems: 1) The backup light relay was getting its power from the headlight system. 2) the relay self destructed some time in the past. I went over a hard bump one day and a piece of metal inside the can lodged itself between the power lead (which was connected to the electrical system) and the coil lead (which was connected to the headlight circuit). I have no idea where the wire to the tranny went. It's missing. |
