Default Preheat hose.

On my 240 GLT the metal preheat hose? that connects onto the exhaust and goes to the air filter box has snapped in half, totally rotten.

Can I bin it? Do I need to seal the airbox side?

Thanks James

Bin it. Open the airbox and remove the thermostatic flapper mechanism as well (it just unclips). Some people seal the hole (a spray paint tin lid works well) but it won't harm anything if you leave it open. The preheat setup is only really needed in extreme cold, i.e. scandinavian, weather on an injected car. It may be a little more important on a carbed car, I have never owned one though so can't comment.

In fact, I'd recommend binning the pre-heat setup regardless of its condition, especially on B200F and B230F engines, it's not unknown for the thermostatic flapper to fail in the 'hot' position, feeding red-hot air directly into the MAF which then causes a premature and expensive failure.

Agree with Wooble. Bin it.

I binned mine on my old '90 240 and never had any problems over the 35k miles I did in the car.

Hi, thanks I'll bin the other half and seal the hole shortly.
