Default Xc90 engine heat is it normal ?

Hi all fairly new to Xc90 ownership as bought a dead t6 with gearbox problems another story got it rebuilt with an American heavy duty version still paid less than book , anyway

My issue may not be an issue but I feel there could be my engine compartment and engine seem to get really hot way hotter than anything I've owned before my fan can come on within 10/15 mins of driving around town short journeys - but temp gauge stays in the same spot never moves -no issues with coolant stays at same level ,

The other day I was mixed driving for around 2 hours and then at the end of the journey it was idiled for maybe 15 mins when I checked the engine bay the cross member above the rads was silly hot on the drivers side , you can feel the heat from the motor around the car when the fan blows it out I may be worrying about nothing and understand there is 2 turbos near the firewall etc just wonder if a fellow t6 owner can share info on theirs

I've not owned a T6 so can't comment directly but as a general rule petrol engine cars do have to lose substantially more heat than a diesel - both through the cooling system and the exhaust. For a larger petrol car I would think that the rad fan kicking in after 10-15 min of idling from cold is not unusual at all. The other issue is that Diesel engines are usually covered top to bottom in sound proofing which keeps the heat away from the engine bay.

I know you didn't say you were comparing it to a diesel but if you are used to them it can be quite alarming how hot petrol engines get.

Ps did you buy the black one from Beverley?

It's pretty normal to be honest.

They warm up very quickly and if it was getting too hot, you'd get some sort of warning in the DIM I'm sure.

The two tiny turbos do get ridiculously hot too.

My 2005 T6 gets really hot too. I don't think it's anything to be worried about. I also have a '16 E class merc diesel that also gets hot. Just try not to touch the bonnet for 20 mins after stopping......

Doesn't really help with the amount of sound insulation on the underside of the bonnet that modern cars have.
