Default ATF Flush & inline oil cooler (fao bobcat?)

I was going to perform an ATF flush when I came back from my Europe trip, however events consipred against me and now my T5 rests nearly at the end of the main runway at Gatwick engineless :(

Upon its return I'm going to do an ATF flush as the fluid was very dark brown and it's done 122k without any documented ATF changes.

1/ How many litres do I need to do a flush? I'm thinking 15-20?

2/ Where is the best place to get it from? Prices vary hugely, so any advice appreciated greatly.

I also wish to add an inline ATF cooler, where is the best place to break into the current 'loop' to divert to the new cooler?

I know Volvo do a kit but it's bound to be costly, Bobcat - where did you get your parts from and what was the approx. cost? How did you mount the new rad?

PS. Sorry for all the recent questions/posts but while my T5 is off the road I'm taking the time to plan it's future!!!!

Default RE: ATF Flush & inline oil cooler (fao bobcat?)

Had a look at my Dad's T5 today to try and work out where best to put ATF cooler on my T5, and it seems I have two choices....

http://www.topdrawcars.com/t-5/ATF.jpg

Position 1 = Red Arrow
Position 2 = Yellow Arrow

Position 1 requires the removal/refitting of my horns (Blue arrow), and presumably the vertical piece plastic (Green Arrow), provided the cooler is the right size, I won't need to reposition the intake assembly (Pink Arrow!!).

If the ATF cooler is installed here,

1. Where do I reposition my horns to? and
2. Isn't this bound to affect the airflow to the radiator?

Position 2 would require me to cut a piece of the undertray and cut a portion of the black plastic surround fitted behind the bumper to fit, however I'm more concerned about the affect of stone damage to the cooler in this position!!

Another option would be to use two inline auxillary coolers, one in Position 1 and the other in Position 2, and possibly removing one out of the loop when winter sets in. After looking at some American sites it seems best to break into the original loop AFTER the radiator, ie take the ATF through this journey..

Gearbox > Radiator > Cooler 1 > Cooler 2 (possibly > Gearbox

Thoughts? (Please!!!) :)

My thoughts.

1) Better check my ATF level as I haev not done it yet.
2) Can't be fagged to look at the manaulto find out how to check it.
C) Can I be boved to change my fluid or should I get the garage to do it.
D) I recal somone mentioning that a full flush sometimes causes more problems than it's worth.
V) Does it realy need an extar cooler?
VI) If you put it where the horns are then you block the intercooler.
VII) move the horns anyway to better cool the intercooler.
8) Why not get the garage to do the change for you whilst the engine is out.
9) 101 Dalmations is borring me.
10) The undeside of this laptop is burning my leg
11) Got to drive to Darby tomoorow, must check tyre pressures
L) When shall I start cooking Tea ( Curry )
M) Do I want a dump Valve.
N) I wish I had My 4x4 24V Sierra Sapphire on the road :(

Good idea, batman.

It's easy

It's easy

>D) I recal somone mentioning that a full flush sometimes

From what I've read, rarely.

>V) Does it realy need an extar cooler?

Not a necessity, but for the price I think it's worth it!

>VI) If you put it where the horns are then you block the

Bobcat has a cooler there, maybe he'll respond...

>VII) move the horns anyway to better cool the intercooler.

Where to?

>8) Why not get the garage to do the change for you whilst the

Cos I'm paying enough labour as it is, not exactly a hard job to do - I'm a student so plenty of time on my hands :)

>9) 101 Dalmations is borring me.

Skip a few chapters on the DVD, no one will notice!

>10) The undeside of this laptop is burning my leg

Ditto.

>11) Got to drive to Darby tomoorow, must check tyre pressures

...

6pm. Eat outside.

>M) Do I want a dump Valve.

No.

>N) I wish I had My 4x4 24V Sierra Sapphire on the road :(

Cosworth? (Not too familiar with the Sierras!)

www.volvospeed.com details moving the horns.

Will check the oil when I get back on friday.

Yes Cosworth engine but not the one originaly for the sierra. They use 4CYL 16V turbo units. My enigne is the 24V 2.9L quadcam v6 from the Granada cosworth. Good for 200BHP without the need for forced induction :) ... I still need to butcher my RWD transmission tunnel to get the 4x4 Box to fit. The rest of the car is prety much Sapphire Cosworth spec.

Cheers for the Volvospeed link, didn't realise there was enough cable to take the horns all the way down there!

One of my friends purchased a K-reg Scorpio Cosworth with a 2.9 24v Cosworth, big bugger of an engine but looked nice and beefy. Assume thats the same engine?

He sold it for £550 I believe and now has the 2.9 12v Sierra 4x4 estate.

What got you into Volvos?

No probs, will move mine when I get a chance.

Yep that's the engine. And yes it's BIG! I can hardly move it on the garage floor.. Where as the 12V is a bit easier.

4x4 Sierras are lots of fun for not much money. I had a 2.9 12V fitted with diffs from a 2.0 4x4. It made it very quick of the line :)

Volvo's....

Well... it was holiday time in my last 2.0 XR4x4 and with my 3 Month old son and all his crap it was a bit of a squeeeez..

So, an estate was on the cards. A Scorpio ( BUG EYE ) 24V Cosworth was the mission, lot's of toys, lot's of power, easyish maintenace, cheapish to run and ve3ry cheap to buy ( nobody likes the look of them )

And then a T5 caugt my eye, I had always liked them despite being FWD.
So it has A fair few toys, Lots of power, Tricky maintenance, expensive to run, not so cheep to buyt ( a good one ).

In hindsight I would have been hapier with the Scorpio ( it's bigger too ) But I still like my T5.

And it was still quite full when we went on holiday last month.

YES! atf should be keep at around 70c to last """"forever"""". On the 850's the atf is cooled by the coolant at ~ 90c! you do the maths.

Ive had my cooler on for about 3000 miles and the fluid is still as new (clear red). last year when i did a fluid change after 3k my fluid was black (maybe the drag racing helped) and i remember my volvo mech commenting that it shouldnt be that colour.

I fitted a volvo cooler to my old V70 T5 1999
It was not cheap , but fitted great ,quite fancy.
The cooler goes below the reg plate , in front of
air con rad.
It is in Volvos BIG accesery book ,cheked to day.
