Default Noisy turbo

Hi

My D5 turbo has started to make a slight whooshing noise on initial wide opening of the throttle, almost as though it's girding its loins.

Also, it is noisy on overrun, making some kind of mechanical 'flatting' noise that's hard to describe. This is quite noticeable when engaging a low gear and descending a hill.

My local specialist is saying that the turbo is getting towards a point where it will need either replacement or refurbishment.

Any views here?

Many thanks.

First measure turbopressure with a torque app check for damaged intercooler hoses
Second check the turbo-compressor on radial play, damage (vanetips) and massbalance disturbing pollution

Many thanks for this. My guess is that the intercooler hoses are ok since the car has just been serviced by a Volvo specialist. I'm not so certain, however, whether or not the specialist is set up to check the turbo in more detail - and I certainly am not.

Are you suggesting that there is the possibility of damage to the vane tips? Would this cause the noise that I hear on the overrun?

"serviced" is a bit vague ,could be an oilchange , they certainly dont check hoses preventive
Its hard to judge from a distance what is wrong , you just have to check from easy/cheap to more difficult /expensive in a methodical manner
With the torque app you can check if the turbo reaches 1.3 bar overpressure on full throttle
Check turbo hoses on cracks /oiltraces also the turbo inlet hose on softness they can collapse on sucktion
Next disconnect the hose from the turbo and inspect it internally

Check the rubber pipe that connects to the turbo inlet - I'd guess it's split.
