XC90 D5 Oil Pressure Switch/light
Hi All,
Well as some of you may know I have searching for an XC90 for some time now and it looks like the right one has come up, ticks all the boxes... Good service history, 70k miles, 58 plate, sport model etc... I haven't taken ownership yet but have made a small deposit on the basis of the following issue being rectified. Refund will be given if not sorted (I have this firmlky in writing!). All the dash warning lights come when the ignition key in turned except for the oil pressure switch/light. It stays OFF all the time. Is this a common issue and could it just be something simple as the switch itself. Obviously to be totally satisfied I want the light to come when I turn the key and go out as soon as the engine starts. The test drive was perfect with no noise that would indicate low or dodgy oil pressure. Anyone got any thoughts? Is this a common issue? Should I be overly cautious or is it me being paranoid? Cheers! |

Hi, just wanted to let you know that you are not being ignored!
Sometimes a problem comes up that no one has the answer for, this might be one! Its either a blown bulb or a sabotaged light for some reason. I would strongly urge you to get a scan done on the cars engine management system. If its reporting problems then you may find out why the bulb was disabled. PS Dont panic over every warning fault log, my xc90 has more false alarms than I can count...from anti skid, to rear sensors to major engine faults. All these go though if i turn off and restart the car. |

if you can get to read the owner's manual it will say against the oil light symbol that this may not be activated . ie not used .
Low oil pressure is accomanied by the general warning light in the middle of the dash going red and a text message in the dash display telling you the oil pressure is low ... However this still needs a sensor which is located low down on the front of the engine near to where the dipstick hole is , it will have a single wire on . if you earth this wire with the engine running you should get this message displayed . The message is much easier to spot than the light coming on if you have it that is .

Thanks for the replies guys and apologies if it appeared that I was impatient!
To be honest, on previous cars Ive had the oil pressure warning came up on the routine engine management check each time you start the engine. The oil pressure (if low) flags up on the driver information text on the dash. I guess maybe this could be the case as Clan suggests! Is there any way of finding out? The car is a D5 2008 sport. |

On Page 42 of the 2008 owners handbook it says :
"For certain engine variants, the symbol for low oil pressure is not used. Warnings are given via display text, see page 180."

I was waiting in the car earlier and checked. I don't have the oil pressure light coming on either so guess it's normal

Nor me (2007 D5 XC70). On mine, there is no connection and never has been to the redundant pressure switch in the block. Instead, there is a level/temperature sensor lower down. I don't know whether there is a pressure sensor in this too for the message display.
