340 Auto Prop Shaft Removal?
I need to change the clutch on my 340 Auto. 87,000 miles.
I have a clutch kit and shims. I read my Haynes manual and it says you have to lever back the prop shaft and it comes off the end of the splines. What tool do you lever it off with and how hard is it supposed to be? Also, do I need to remove the exhaust pipe first, or can it be done without disturbing the exhaust? |

RE: 340 Auto Prop Shaft Removal?
You can lever it with a screwdriver if you like but it can be taken off with just your hands buy pulling it back to release it from the front end and then forward to release from the back. Moving the exhaust from the hangers and supporting it off to one side helps with removal of the prop but if you remove it completely from the car this will aid you in removal of the transmission. (BEWARE! the prop and gearbox are heavier then they look for their size, I was surprised by their weight when I did it.)

RE: 340 Auto Prop Shaft Removal?
i thoguht the prop was quite light
iirc the haynes manual was wrong about the manual prop (not sure for autos). on a manual you have to slide it all the way FORWARDS (NOT backwards) to slide it off the rear spline, then slide it backwards off the front one. i'd use the biggest crowbar you can find. those things get stuck on TIGHT. |

RE: 340 Auto Prop Shaft Removal?
The prop weighs as much as a fether. You do need to slide off the diff end onto the engine end, then you can slide it off the engine end. You will also have to move the exhaust to get every thing out.
Undo to the bellhousing and pull it back - you may well need to remover the engine from the mounts to do this. From there it is plain sailing. Dai

Sorry about the flaw in my last post about the prop being heavy, I only meant to say about the bellhousing being heavy, got a bit carried away it was one of those days . The prop is very light.
