Bad engine vibration after top mount change
Hello all.
V70 D5 MY06 Been noticing a clicking sound when taking off recently and a knocking sound when driving slowly over bumps. I changed the torque rod which connects from gearbox housing to subframe as the rubber looked well warn and ripped and problem was still there. Spoke to local dealer and they recommended changing the top engine mount that connects to the cross-stay under the bonnet. The rubber in the original mount was all but disconnected from the alu housing. With this changed I started the car for a test drive and there is a terrible vibration throughout the car at idle and again at between 2700-2800rpm. I read somewhere else on here a year or so back that a split intercooler pipe could cause a vibration problem, as could other engine mounts. Is there only 1 top engine mount and whereabouts are the lower ones. Are they easy to change/check? |

What type of top mount did you install, OE or polyurethane?

I understand you can't use polyurethane mounts on the Diesel engine..only the petrol ones.

top mount
Hi Barnster,
You should have the newer 'square' type mount on your D5, if you look at it does look like its free to move around (which it is in one direction), heres a pic in this thread that might help: http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=105652 The click you describe, do you get this just once as you start off, or more than once ?. The square mounts apparently dont give the same problems as the older round version, what sort of miles does yours have? |

The click sound has been there since I bought the car with 100K miles and I have learned to live with it.
The clonk has gone now I have changed the top mount. The main issue now is the horrendous vibration at tickover and resonance at around 1500 and 2600-2800 rpm. The tickover vibration makes my head throb! Car currently has 136K and the engine pulls well and smoothly albeit with the above issue. I've had all sorts of suggestions including a bent crank from "experts" but just want to ascertain if there are other mounts that's typically cause this. |

The D5 has pneumatic front and rear engine mounts.
At 1,500 rpm, they're subjected to vacuum from the pump. Check they're getting and holding vacuum. Get a small dry vacuum gauge and T-piece for the latter.

I have been having similar issues, I found the vacuum tubes and the electronic value yesterday and had a play with it. The tube going to the rear mount was trapped as it goes through the engine area. Fixed and tested. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQG5EFluk0g If I pull the tube I can feel the vacuum (Which turns off when I rev the engine, let the revs drop, it turns back on again. So all good. Also, if I suck on the tube that goes to the mounts, it also steadies the engine. So it all appears to work better now. The engine is still very tappy tappy at the moment??
