Default Xc90 transmission issue

Hi everyone, I was driving home tonight and as I pulled away from the lights the car increased in speed and then failed to change from 3rd to 4th. I then realised that the revs were stopping at about 3500 and would not climb further.
In manual it works but not as well as it had previously.
It is a xc90 2007 d5 with 115k miles. Not had any issues at all before with transmission.
It feels like it's slipping and not converting to output. Could it be fluid loss? If so how do I check?
Thanks in advance
Nick

Under the gearbox should be a shiny dome headed drain plug, this has a smaller bolt inside it. The smaller bolt is the level check bolt, it has a tube rising up a couple of inches into the gearbox. With the tyranny warm and engine running you undo the small inner bolt and either drain excess oil or you need to add some until it drains out.
Filler plug is on top the tyranny under the air box on mine, it's a shiny torx bolt, think it's T50, only remove this one, adjacent bolts release bits in the tranny!
There are loads of threads on oil changes, and I have assumed yours is the six speed, if it's the five speed it's got a dipstick.

Forgot to add, ONLY USE THE CORRECT OIL!
Buy it from Volvo or check the spec and source it elsewhere.
Should be 3309 from memory.

Thanks for the info, I will check it out this morning. One further question though, does it sound like fluid from my description of driving the vehicle? I only ask as I might be better going straight to the local independent?

To be honest most people try a fluid change when the box plays up.
The sad thing is that sometimes late oil changes don't help, despite what Volvo say these auto boxes need oil changes....
Check the threads on here, there are loads about oil changes.
