Tyre speed rating
Volvo V50 2.4i. 205/50/R17
Just about to get four new tyres and there's a bit of confusion. The tyre place has an offer online in coordination with Falken, so I need to do it through their website. When I enter my reg no it says I need speed rating W. But I then phoned the place up to double check and they said going off the reg can be unreliable and to check what tyres I currently have. All tyres are 93V extra load. The thing is I was going to get the Falken all-seasons and they only go up to a V. I've checked the owners manual online and it says: 205/50 R17 93W Extra Load 205/50 R17 93Q/T/H/V M+S Extra Load Any idea if V is okay or do I need W? |

Double check it, but, the Falken AllSeason appears to be an M+S tyre so it's covered by that second line from the manual and 93V should do. If I remember right my V70 also allows a lower rating for a winter tyre.

V are OK up to 149 mph and W are up to 186 mph.
V should be fine. If in doubt Google tyre speed ratings.

Tyres are checked at Mot time and any tyres rated k or below would be a fail (68mph). In practice, you wouldn’t be able to buy a tyre with a speed rating too low for your car…. You usually drop a letter or two with winters.

My S40 2.4i auto.
Fitted Falken tyres 205/17/93W after purchase 6 years ago and they have been excellent. I think the extra load 93 is more important than v or w speed rating.

The tyres already on are 93V XL and the all seasons you want are 93V XL?

But from a safety perspective on a family runabout I would completely agree - better to have margins in the load rather than speed rating.
