Clucking in the car when steering left
That's not a spelling mistake, and there isn't a hen in there. I'm getting an intermittent loud clucking noise that sounds right in the middle of the car. Mainly when the steering wheel is turned left (even the slightest left will do - it's NOT a full lock thing), it may come on when on a slightly rough straight road (but not speed bumps). It may not do it at all. Steering right or pulling handbrake up and releasing again will stop it. The speed of cluck is related to the vehicle speed, and moving the shift from Drive to Neutral makes no difference. If the road is wet, there's less chance of it happening. The mechanic who was going to sort out the blow on the exhaust yesterday was baffled. (Yes, I know...) Since they did the exhaust (for the third time since new front pipe fitted for MOT), it's not clucked. Only gone 4 miles, though. The car in question is a 1998 V70 2.5L 10V auto with 180,000+ on the clock. It's not marbles in the glovebox, or any of the other obvious (except to the customer...) things like that. I've seen another thread where a clunk seems to have been handbrake linings coming apart - here the handbrake is working perfectly.

could it be the transmission mount? I have a similar clunk when turning right in reverse and I've just ordered a new mount in the hope its that. https://www.partsmonster.co.uk/volvo...ush-9443-p.asp
Or there are two large sphere engine mounts, one at the front of the engine and one at the back. If they were worn they might be allowing engine to move around and knock? https://www.partsmonster.co.uk/volvo...ar-20194-p.asp

Sounds like it could be a driveshaft cv joint.

I had wondered about CVJs but that wouldn't be so loud inside the car - and applying and releasing the handbrake wouldn't affect those. Engine mounts is something else I've considered, but once again the handbrake wouldn't come into play. It's not a CLUNK, but a series of CLUCKS which vary in speed with the speed of the car (not the engine speed). They sound as if they are coming from the handbrake handle, but holding it still or waggling it maked no difference. Pulling it up and releasing it does have an effect. At present it's not doing it, and I don't mean this very minute because I'm in the house... I mean just before 1700 when I got an urgent call from over the road where there are three people in a mini lockdown. A medical sample of some sort should have been collected from their porch, but hadn't been, and it had to catch the 1700 collection at a specific PO. It did, without a single cluck. I have suspicions that the fixing of the recurrent exhaust problem is connected to this - but won't know until one or t'other sets off again. (I don't know why there is such a problem with this particular pipe on the exhaust (especially as the last front pipe lasted seven years - pipe was still sound but the cat had died). but I do rather like having the cat in the front pipe - makes it quite a bit harder to pinch...)
BTW Ta for that link. Could come in handy. Thanks for the suggestions. Will update if anything changes. |

I realise that this is going to be unlikely, but it might be worth checking your wheel nuts. I have had a loose wheel before and although it doesn't sound like a demented duck, it will clonk rather loudly and increase as the car speeds up!

Sorry. Not wheel nuts, but thanks for the suggestion. Ever since a girlfriend phoned me to come out to see what was wrong with her car as it didn't feel right, I've been very careful about wheel nuts. I told her to drive my Viva back and I'd try her Allegro. Started off, and 20 yards on a wheel fell off. No nuts to be seen. Walked back 3/4 of a mile - no nuts. Girlfriend panicking. Swiped a nut each off the other wheels, and told her to take it back to the clown who had repaired her brakes. She'd only been through the Mersey Tunnel twice and up to Tarleton and back... Car was not damaged, by the way. I was going very slowly.

From what you have described regarding the effect of the handbrake, I'd suggest that one of the handbrake shoes has broken up. Not uncommon as I had it both on my old C70 coupe and C70 convertible. Makes a horrible noise.
Regards John

Just because the handbrake appears to be working doesn't mean that that the problem isn't there IMHO
