Default Only AM works ?

All of a sudden the FM stopped working on my '93 240 radio. A song was playing and then I thought the radio turned off. Actually if I turn the volume up all the way you can hear the station playing, but very low and garbled. The AM band works normally. Any suggestion what to look for? Do you think the problem is in the radio, the amp or both?

Any help is most appreciated.

Hi ed...you say the am works so perhaps we can rule out your speakers...on both of my volvos the fm is hit and miss and as i trundle around the hills and valleys the signal comes and goes...it sounds to me like an ariel issue...if its possible to remove your radio and check the antennae connection to it..(this is normally the thickest black or grey wire to the radio...if this is all in order..try the other end...turn the radio on and place your hand on the ariel ..depending on which ariel you have ensure it is fully extended...you should hear a slight difference in reception..if its possible on your model to check where the wire connects to the ariel, on my 240 its a single screw which gives me access to check this...hope this gets things started!!..good luck..regards hj.
