volvo 940 1993 2.4 turbo diesel
Hi All Newbie Calling
I have a volvo 940 diesel and two faults have occured firstly the rev counter stopped working about a week ago and then today the tempreture gauge either reads halfway or nothing at all, are you able to tell me where the rev counter gets its signal from and are there any common faults with the tempreture gauge regards PhilllW |

Quite a few threads on this around the place, mine is also a 93. Have no clue as to where the rev counter gets its' info, but the fact that it is combined with the temp gauge problem indicates that it is a fault with either the gauges or more likely the circut board or connnections thereto, where all the sensors input.
My temp gauge went tempremental, got the cluster out and disconnected the contacts. The circuit board covers the entire rear surface of the cluster and consists of a maze of wires encased in plastic. All the connectors from the engine and on the board appeared shiny - you would think that the car had just come off a production line. Anyway used contact cleaner and replaced everything firmly. Result, the temp gauge now responds to a tap on the dash and on cold days the ABS light comes on until the car has warmed up, perhaps some moisture has been let in. Ha! Perhaps you will have better luck. The alternative is to try and get another cluster or circuit board, but as these would come from a car of similar vintage presumably the problem will recur. The circuit boards, which are Japanese may no longer be available and if they are will be quite costly, which I can't afford at the moment. Reading the FAQ will help you in getting the cluster out, but apart from saying that the problem will be the either gauges or board does not give much info as to what to do about it!. Do have a read of grahamebardell's post. Looking forward to hearing how you get on. jor Last edited by jor; Dec 4th, 2008 at 00:10. |

My 740 TD is exactly the same- although on some VERY cold mornings the rev counter will start working again for a while. the temp gauge is the same, reads either half way or nothing. I am going to give these guys a try, www.clusterrepairsuk.co.uk
but need to wait until the car comes off the road as you need to send the cluster off to them. If anyone else tries them let me know if they get it sorted |

The rev counter is supplied from the alternator. I'm told that the (thin) red wire is the field activator and the red/white the tachometer.
