Jolt - Automatic Gearbox
Hi, V40 2003, back from a full service, radiator replaced and automatic gearbox cooler radiator also replaced as it was leaking oil.
The automatic gearbox had clearly been leaking oil, without me knowing, for a few days before it got to the garage, but the car got to the garage without any warning lights. The automatic gear change is smooth, but I have noticed that if the car is in drive, going down a steep hill, there is a sudden jolt as the gearbox moves down the gears to slow the car down. I have gone through the gears manually, up and down, and the car only jolts when moving between 1-2. The automatic gearbox oil was replaced when the gearbox radiator cooler was installed. Is this jolt a warning? Something that I can investigate? Or, is it not something to worry about too much.

Put 100ml fluid in the box, then in 50ml increments until it stops

Hi, thank you for your reply. You think it is an oil issue?
Just had a quick read of the guide on how to top up gearbox oil http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=210809 A job for the weekend.

Do NOT play pretend mechanic with your automatic transmission.
Take your car back to the mechanic and have re check the fluid level IMMEDIATELY

i think he is saying, you had it service, its not right, take it back for them to check, and for you not to try and fix it.... basically see what they say first.
I know on some auto boxes, over filling wrecks them..

It is cool. The car had to be recovered today so there was not even an opportunity to inspect it.
I collected it from the garage yesterday, noticed an occasional gear slip/jolt in lower gears. On the way out today, suddenly the Transmission warning came on, then the Engine Management light came on. Pulled over straight away, a quick look in the engine and again, what looked like transmission oil on the engine floor try. Quick call o the RAC. They hooked up their reader and it came back with: DTC: 76,Fault codes in gearbox control unit I had the car towed back to the garage who diagnosed the transmission oil leak and installed the oil cooler radiator and replaced the oil etc only a few days back. My guess is that the gearbox is wrecked ot too expensive to consider repairing. I purchased the car with a FSH from a garage in Oxford and only collected it on 12 September, on 17 September Halfords noticed a fluid leak when I was getting my free break test. They thought it was a coolant leak. I booked it into my local garage on 22 September and they diagnosed the transmission oil leak, and they took until 28 September to fix the leak .(yesterday) Today , 29 September the car had to be recovered. In my reckoning, I have had 9 days out of the car. Purchase cost 1,000, and close to 500 in repairs. Unless I get some miraculous new from garage it was towed to, I will try and return the car to the garage I purchased it from.
