Default Replacement key - any way to reduce costs?

So I love my new s40. But they fob is knackered and I'm having to open it using a valet key at the moment!

After exhaustive reading online it looks like the only way to get a replacement fob is through a dealer. But the want to charge 240 for the fob, programming, and software.

Before biting the bullet, I wanted to check with you guys to see if you're aware of anything I could do to bring the cost down? Buy a new blank fob from volvo direct or something?

Many thanks for any insight!

Andrew

No basically , you pay for the extremely high security of these keys .
The actual key fob is about £80 I think , + metal key blade , + software + labour which should not be more than 20 minutes ...

Out of interest, what aspect is physically broken? Assume the buttons are still clicking etc as you'd expect?

Can you start the car with it?

I can only confirm what Clan has said - dealer only. I actually contacted 3rd party service one day (biggest company in Ire that deals with car replacement keys) and although they said they are able to get blank key, I would have to leave the car with them so they can take it to Volvo to program it in. And it was actually more than ordering it trough dealership...

ur stuck, sorry :/

IF it is just the plastic case thats broken, you May be able to buy a 2nd hand one and swap Everything into the "new" case,
battery, pcb , buttons (pick the better ones to fit) AND the bit of "random looking plastic blob" that is for the immobiliser,,

if its totally u/s volvo dealer, and get them to Remove all other "keys" from the car other than ones you have in your possession ,

I looked at getting a spare key for my car but decided against it on cost grounds.
I now insure the key for £15 pa with RAC.
If I lose the key they transport the car to the nearest Volvo dealer and replace the key.
I can only use one key at a time so I do without a spare.

Thank you for the advice.

I may try to get another fob shell and try that as the key starts the car...

It just frustrates me that volvo have a bit of a key cartel on the go...

It's a standard security measure, as far as I know Fiat are the most expensive, and I only got one as standard.
