Default Volvo 850 T5 clutch issues (PICS ADDED - URGENT HELP NEEDED)

Hi all, after the clutch release bearing gave up I decdied to renew it along with the clutch and the RMS. My car is a 1996 Volvo 850 T5 manual.

Upon disassembly, the garage noticed the new and old clutches are completely different. Old one has a part number of 9176206 and appears to be from a Volvo C70/V70 whereas I bought a new clutch kit from partsforvolvos part number 272218, which I have been told should fit.

How does a V70 version fit and an 850 not fit? They are different combined heights as can be seen in the pics. Any guidance/help would be gratefully received as the car is on the ramp until we get to the bottom of it. Thanks!

All I can think of is the new one is for either a modified flywheel or a dual mass one and yours is still a single one?. I don't know what's in your car but the friction plates are totally different as well so maybe if it is that it'll at least get you on your way again so to speak.

I only have experience with SMF setup, but the lack of springs in your old clutch and the thickness of the flywheel would indicate that yours is a dual mass.

The 850R clutch is made for a single mass flywheel.
The change from SMF to DMF was around 1998, has the engine been replaced in your car ? Maybe someone dropped the whole engine/gearbox assembly from a DMF car at some point, because usually people dont upgrade from single to dual (dmf are pricey !)

A quick Google search for 'Volvo 272218' brings up a genuine clutch kit for 850R and S/V70 upto 2000 for a single mass flywheel. A search for 'Volvo 9176206' shows a clutch kit for a dual mass flywheel.

Glad it is all sorted.

Just one genuine question. Did your garage chappie not offer any advice regarding the different clutches, as I would have thought it was obvious when standing there in front of the issue. Or was it a case of: you supplied the clutch, you sort?

Does the gearbox have an internal or external slave cylinder?

I suspect it has all been swapped as even the early 70 variant cars had SMF & external slaves....
