Default Diagnostic Help

I currently have 2no. problems with my Volvo which are baffling both me and the garages that it has been to, so I was wondering if anybody on here is able to help.

The car is a 2009 (59 registration plate) V70 2.4 diesel, c175hp, under the bonnet the engine says D5 on it but it is not badged as such. It's a manual gearbox.

1. When accelerating in gears 4, 5 or 6 between 2-3000rpm the rev counter will every now and again (maybe 2 or 3 times in a 1 hour drive) shoot up quickly with no noticeable increase in engine power or acceleration. I originally thought that it might be the clutch slipping but the clutch has been checked and is fine.

2. I have to top up the engine coolant every 1-2 weeks and have had to for about 6 months now. I do about 500 miles a week. Neither me or any garage that it has been to can find any sign of a leak.

I don't know if the two problems above are related in any way or completely separate but any help that people can give would be very much appreciated.

Apart from these two issues the car drives absolutely fine.

1. When the rev counter shoots up, does the engine speed increase also?

2. Dig out and flip the expansion cap seal as a possible free fix.
What are you topping up with and how much are you having to put in?

1. The engine makes a whirring noise (hard to explain it exactly) which draws attention to the rev counter shooting up for a second or two before settling back down.

2. Topping up with Halfords ready mix coolant, probably up to or a bit less than half a pint each time.

Do you have any head gasket failure symptoms?

Doesn't this sound like water/oil feeding the turbo?

What would you suggest I look for? It's not using / losing oil but the coolant is going down regularly.

Could this be where I'm losing the coolant too then?

Not sure sure about Volvos but EGR coolers can develop leaks.

I'd start with the obvious: expansion tank, cap, radiator, heater matrix, check oil for contamination, check hoses.
