Replacing the S80, do i dare buy another Volvo?
OK, so i've investigated my leccy window problem, as suspected it's the more expensive option, the regulator unwell. Bloody things made of chocolate! Very poor Volvo, very poor! Even if i replaced it, i'd be scared to death every time i used the window it will ping again.
Along with a few other things on the car. Im not very impressed with it. Stunning car on the motorway, and economy is spot on for the size! But there is more to a car than it's MPG's! HOWEVER, i'm with Peter Best Insurance who like Volvo's and Saabs. I will ring them to ask what they would class as "classic". I fear i may be stuck to Volvo's! Idealy i'd love them to say i could have an Accord, but i doubt that. Do i go for an older Volvo? Are they better made? Thinking 850 (there is a Diesel Estate for sale down the road with 168k miles on, is that a big high?). Or even S/V/C70? Are they better made than this Chocolate S80? (No Turbo's or Auto's tho) Your thoughts much apreciated Last edited by weble; Nov 30th, 2011 at 15:43. |

Personally, I wouldn't buy a Volvo any NEWER than my V70..P1 Classic.
When I came back to Volvo I didn't want anything later..I wanted a Volvo Volvo...LOL I was offered several P2's but I prefer the "brick" shape without the hips..and the "old" 4-speed auto box too. I would happily buy a 900/850/V70 P1...but that's about it I'm afraid. I just think the older models are more reliable, have less sophisticated technology..and much easier to repair in general. Highly personal and subjective view I grant you..but that's where my choice would be. Neil

I've found a nice looking 1999 V70 locally at a dealer, who's prepaired to take the S80 as P/X, i'll lose money, but not as much as i'll lose if i keep it and be scared to use it.
It's the 2.4 non turbo manual, which is my engine and gearbox of choice. I'll drive over tomorrow see if i cant talk a deal I've spoken to my insurance company i'm pretty much stuck to Volvo's, Merc's, BMW's, Saab's and Rover's. So i guess it's gonna be a Volvo again, but older this time |

Personally, the newest Volvo I'd have again would be an 850/900 series. Maybe an early S/V70 with a conventional dizzy but nothing with an ETM.

Good point, what year do the ETM's start being fitted? Would a 1999 V have one?

I've decieded, that my C30 will be my last Volvo. I'm very satisfied. It isn't my first, but it will be - unless something changes - my last.
Next car... YUMMY Dodge Challenger RT/SRT8 in Orange I don't want another Volvo, due to their German business methods. You have a problem (like cracking seat materials) and Volvo Germanys says "We can't do anything. We only import the cars and don't manufacture them".

With my limited knowledge i have to totally agree with everything thats been said already. Stick to early 70's 850 or the 900 (which is even easier to work on)
I've owned all of the above at some stage. P reg S70 n/a was my first Volvo - lack of the knowledge i have now meant i scrapped it - one of my biggest regrets L reg 850 Turbo - miss that car so much - but not as refined as the 70's R reg 940 lpt - bought it as project, really easy to work on with 4 cylinder engine - soooo much room. Dare i say even comfier to drive than the S70 V reg S70 2.5D (Audi engine) swapped the 940 for this for mum. 45 - 50 mpg (ish) and its an Audi engine - should last forever. No reason why an older one with FSH won't restore your faith Just to add - i test drove a 2004 V70 D5 couple of months ago - it could have been any newer car, didn't feel special at all

ETM maybe unavoidable then on a V70. hmm.... well i'll give it a look. As long as the rest of it is bolted together a bit better with less to go wrong.
The one i'm eyeing up has 2 owners, last one since 2002 with Full dealer history.... but then that's exactly the same as my S80 Although it does have 120,000 miles not 144,000 miles like mine |
