Default V70 D5 163 '03 Tappets - Pls Help!

Dear all

Just serviced my D5, noisy idle, tappets sound like they need doing.

Rang the local garage who asked if its hydraulic or manual tappets. They wont touch it if its hydraulic. Can anyone tell me? V70 D5 163 from '03 on 128k miles and no history of injector problems etc.

Thanks,

Charlie

They are hydraulic tappets. What oil are you using?

Castrol Edge 0W-30 A5/B5 as recommended.

Need something thicker? 10W?

THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO RESPOND :-)

Use something a bit more viscous. Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 A3/B4 is a great oil to use in these engines.

Agreed. i use 5/30 in winter. A5B5.

Im going to run A3B4 5/40 this summer, Shell Helix.

Also, try some AMETCH RESTORE oil. put a nice coating in the cylinder and lifters and followers.

Default Daft question......

Are you sure it's not the injectors ticking away? They can be quite noisy and a bit metal-on-metal sounding. You might want to try getting a long screwdriver or solid bar putting it to your ear and the other end on the injectors and various parts of the rocker covers.....you might be able to isolate the source of the noise.....just be careful if you have long hair! I would say my injectors are as noisy as my engine more or less.....

If you use some Amtech Restore oil, I will eat my hat if you don't notice a difference after 500 miles.

Ive used it in different cars, from an old Alfa Romeo Spider with a rough idle which it smoothed out lovely, to this XC90 I have, again, its made the engine quieter and smoother. Expensive, but in my opinion, very good.

Current oil is recommended by Volvo for the engine apparently (successor to Castrol Formula SLX 0w30).

Will move to a heavier oil based on this advice.

Opinions on AMTECH seem divided, but i appreciate your input on the discussion.

Mechanic thinks it a particular tappet not injectors.

Thanks all!
