A 92 car would've had an in tank pump and a pump next to the fuel filter underneath the car. So yes is the answer

The car will run fairly well with a failed in-tank lift pump, especially if you keep the tank reasonably full. The main symptom you might be aware of is that the main pump under the car will be noisier. If the main pump fails the car won’t run.

When you first turn the ignition to position 2 after the car has been standing a while (or you have intentionally relieved the fuel system pressure) then you should hear the pump(s) whirring briefly while they pressurise the rail. If you don’t, the most likely cause is the fuel injection relay rather than the actual pumps. There are some troubleshooting tips in the FAQ which might help you.

Thank you for the reply I never noticed the faq before.
It says NA-engines use the -270 relay and T turbos use the -608 relay what's the difference? Also are the fuel pump relay and the injection relay the same relay

I thought the distinction was that early Kjet engines used a green relay and later LHjetronic the white one you linked.

I’ve only ever encountered the white one, but it’s easy enough to check which one you have. Just open up access to the fuse box (behind the ashtray) and look with a torch. In order to replace the relay you will probably find it easier to remove the cubbyhole above the ashtray too.

I personally favour Meyle replacements as they appear to be the same as the Volvo originals.

There are a couple of other electrical components that can have a similar effect on the fuel pumps. The ignition amplifier and the radio suppression relay. These are both found under the bonnet. I’ve never had a problem with either of these but if a replacement fuel relay doesn’t solve the problem then they will be the next things to check.

Just fixed a long-term intermittent non-start on my '93 2l NA 940. Replaced the big white relay on the left hand end of the middle row of relays. Part numbers 898151 / 3523608

Definitely easier if you remove the cigarette lighter and cubby. Prise the plastic trim off the front of the lighter socket and you'll find a couple of screws, remove those and you can pull the whole assembly forward. Lighter is fed with a couple of spade connectors so easy to disconnect the whole thing.

My replacement relay was from eBay - cheap Chinese tat but it's done the job for now. £12.99 I think it was, which is half the price of a pattern original. The relay I pulled out was the original one from October '92 so it's done pretty well considering. Haven't taken it apart yet but the 30 pin feels slightly loose which probably explains why the issue I had was intermittent.
