Default S40 with HU655 tinny sound from front only

Hi, Ive just helped a friend replace his failing S40 with a newer one and we're having issues with the audio system.

The car has an HU655 head with the additional amp in the boot but all we can get from it is a relatively quiet tinny sound from the front speakers?

I spoke to the local volvo dealer and he suggested the head was the issue (though he admitted he didnt know there was a version with an external amp) so we purchased a replacement second hand one that was guaranteed to work but actually produces exactly the same issue.

I could buy an amp next BUT I'm wondering if theres something else we should be doing that would save us spending more money unnecessarily?

I would appreciate your help. Thanks in advance.

Check the amp fuse first. Mine blew and I only had sound from the tweeters. Also, check that the AUX cable is fitted proprly on the stereo and the amp

Failing that, it could be either the stereo or the amp are faulty. I have both as spares, so let me know if you need either

Thanks very much Gatos. Intrigued by the idea of the amp fuse. Can you tell me where its located please. Am intending popping over to see him and his car with a voltmeter .. which hopefully will help me check the cables.

I had those symptoms when the AUX cable was unplugged from the HU. If your sub is making noise, I am sure that is powered by the external amp, and if so, then it clearly points to the same AUX cable issue happening here?

(I take it you have plugged the small black round AUX cable into the back of the HU along with the two big ISO clunk connectors? If you have the amp there are 3 cables to plug in. 4 if you have the autochanger.)

If there's no power from the amp then yes I'd guess the amp fuse

I would be tempted to buy the spare amp for use in the van although given the large metal box soundstange, I think probably easier and maybe cheaper to buy any old crap from eBay

If I remember correctly it is in the engine bay fusebox. I blew mine when I unplugged the amp power cable with the stereo being on........

This is how it usually goes

1. Disconnect the battery for 2 minutes before starting this job.
2. Connect the battery again after completing this job.
3. Did you check you had the radio code before disconnecting the battery?

Cheeky! LOL. I have sourced the codes for both the HU655 head units and they both present the same issue. So suggests cable, amp or speakers (unless I've been really unlucky). I just didnt want to buy another amp in case it turned out there was something else to check first.

I take it both HUs have the two small round DIN sockets on the back? If there's only one, that's for the CD autochanger, and you've been diddled. However, seems unlikely that someone would install a 655 in their own car and put up with non-functioning speakers....

Double DIN socket

Single DIN socket

Note the 8-pin socket for the autochanger is on both HUs and the 6-pin DIN socket is for the AUX cable.

My money would be on the fuse, if not you've got some wiring to check My last car had a dicky o/s/f door speaker but only when using AM radio. Weird. I assumed a dodgy cable somewhere, but it had the amp, so it could literally have been anywhere in the cable routing along the car
