Default Engine won't turn over (1993 850)

Alright. Here's the entire story:

A few weeks ago (probably 2 or 3) I was messing with the stereo, and 2 wires touched and sparked. I plugged the radio back in, and it wouldn't work. So, I check the fuses, found one that had blown, and replaced it. Radio still wouldn't work and the engine would turn over, and then chug for a few seconds, then cut off. So, I let it sit for around 10 min., tried again, and it was fine. Worked for probably around a week. Also, I took the stereo out (after a few days), looked at it, couldn't see anything wrong, put it back in, and it started working again, too. Everything was just dandy.

Then, I was driving around town a bit. Went to a few stores. And at about the 3rd stop I made, I got back in my car, and it wouldn't start. Engine just wouldn't turn over. So, I got a toe-truck to come out, they tried to jump-start it, and it wouldn't work, so they toed it to the mechanics we generally use. They checked it out, said we had a dead battery, replaced it, and everything was going just great.

Now, probably around a week after getting the battery replaced, the engine won't turn over, again. Anyone have any idea why? Could this have anything to do with the radio?

Thanks for any help.

If your battery is just discharging over a period of time, then it would make me think that your alternator is faulty. Is your charging circuit light illuminated?

You can check out your alternator by getting the car going (using jump leads if necessary) and measuring the voltage across the battery using a multimeter. If the alternator is OK it should read something like 15 Volts. If the alternator is not working it is more likely to be about 12 Volts.

If the sparking caused the fuse to blow then I rekon it would be unlikely it had caused any other damage. I rekon the problems arising now are just a co-incidence.

Good Luck.

Hey,
Volvo dealer check it out. Apparently the gas pump needs to be replaced. They are asking $540 (+ $90 diagnosis charge which we have to pay) for the part and installation. But, a garage down the street will cost us $470 to get the car towed to, the part, and installation. So, that's a no brainer.
Too bad the problem had to have such a pricey fix...
