Default 2012 S80 blower fan noise and vibration

https://youtu.be/TcLNr1jz22k

Hi all, I have an awful noise from my blower fan. Video link above.

Any wise words of wisdom/ideas?

If it's a new fan I'll just deal with it as it's not at all speeds. Don't really fancy taking the whole dash apart and Seat out etc

Many thanks!

Its possible leaves could be trapped where they shouldn't be (in or near the fan). Try giving it a clean out by removing the scuttle panel underneath the windscreen and seeing if there's any leaves down there. You might be able to reach it, but if not, you might have to improvise with some kind of long handle with something to grip whatever is stuck down there (if anything).

If the blower motor was bad, it would likely be making noise at all speeds. Also might be worth replacing your pollen filter... its likely blocked. The blockage could be a reason as to why leaves or debris got through to the fan.

Its the fan out of balance, It has probably sucked some leaves in. . If you take the black plastic panel off the base of the windscreen you might be able to get your hand down in there and clean the debris out.

Ah yes, you absolute heros.

Wiper arms off, scuttle off and you can clearly see the fan and housing. Got the long nose vacuum out, nothing of any note. Maybe a bit of small grit. Felt around the inside of the vanes... Felt/found the metallic balancing weight....

Hold up what's that lodged between the vanes?!

Took a bit of prying but it came out. Any ideas?

Lovely silent fan! Thankyou so much!

Thanks for reporting back with pictures :-)

Am I wrong and is it just me, but unlike my 855 TDI, our V70's have the cabin filter after the fan? So, the fan gets dirty and can suck garbage :-(

Also, it is so easy to replace cabin filter on 850...

Arghhhh

Yes. Fan then filter.

And agreed, changing the filter is an arse of a job.

Yep and its often a neglected item for that very reason. Still worth changing though at some point. Sometimes the filter can be disgusting!

I suppose it might be a balancing weight that's fallen off the impeller. You might be able to see where it was originally clipped on from a remaining mark ?

However if the fan is now nice and quiet, "if it aint broke, don't fix it" !

They use little metallic clips to balance them that are probably only a 0.5-1gram. Anything more than that would've been put into the injection molding as a feature.

It's deffinately a foreign body. Its just a little rubber wedge so guess a stand off or foot off something. I did change the battery last year so it's possible that i dislodged it from the plastics then and it's found it's way in there.
