Perhaps just get one from your Volvo dealer ? It will be more expensive (ask for some discount). You know it will be the right one.

I agree. Just phone the dealer and you'll get the right part the first time. It might be more expensive, but the quality will be there.

This is now fixed. I didn't get around to looking at it for a while as the weather turned nice and I thought I'd enjoy it, rather than crawling around on the floor swearing and wishing I'd made different life choices.
I popped into to a volvo dealership (different to my local) and asked to look at the filter they called up - it was exactly the same as the new Bosch one I'd bought. As it turns out it doesn't matter what the top of the filter looks like, per my original post, as the inside of the filter housing has 3 legs that will stop against the main top section of the filter before that. There were also no witness marks on the translucent plastic ring when I removed it. I actually measured it and there's about 8mm clearance. What did fix the leak was removing the filter cap, the filter, and the sealing ring, and cleaning all of them + the filter body within an inch of their lives. Once re-seated and tightened up hand tight it's been bone dry. When I'd wrestled with the filter the first time there were a few rust flakes that had come off the chassis, I wouldn't be surprised if one of those had made its way into the arrangement and given me the problem in the first place. Lesson learned for next time. Thanks again to everyone for their help. |
