Got a new Xenon headlight "bulb" for my V70 from Halfords for £42 just a couple of weeks ago. I forget the make (could have been Osram or Philips), but it was the same as the one that came out.

I too read the bit in the handbook about instant and terminal electrocution on even so much as looking at the lamp, but I decided to risk it anyway. The guys in Halfords just laughed when I mentioned the paragraph in the handbook, pointing out that they change these lamps all time, and it's otherwise a nice little earner for the dealer.

It was a doddle, and took no more than ten minutes. You pull up two big retaining pins and remove the whole headlamp unit, disconnect everything, then change the lamp. Volvo have indeed made it very easy.

Also, not wanting to throw away a perfectly good lamp, I only changed the one. Both headlamps illuminate perfectly well and there's no obvious colour difference between the two.

Hi Jack, interesting the comment from Halfords staff. I suppose they have to put these comments in the manual for insurance purposes, Volvo parts did lay it on a bit thick. Thank you for your helpful comment, as you said it should be a doddle.

My sister had her 2013 XC70 serviced at a Volvo dealer recently and they commented that one of the headlights was pink-ish in light colour which is a sign that failure is imminent (which is correct). However when she queried the astronomical replacement cost - they say the book time is 40 mins as they have to leave the car for 20 mins before starting work due to the stored electrical charge which is utter BS. However Volvo's procedures need to be compliant with legislation in every country they operate so it might be that?

Interesting that in this video - shared in another thread by another member - the chap is holding the bulb whilst it's running !
