Hi Kev

Yes, I’ve given Black Circles a try filling in the registration number and it’s come up with two tyre sizes 225/50R 17 W98 and 245/40R 18 Y97.

The 245/40R 18 is the size you mentioned earlier.
As already established, it doesn’t match the size on the B pillar.

I could telephone or better still email my insurance company and ask if it would affect my cover in any way.
I only guessing here, but if they are in any doubt there’s no medals for guessing what their answer will be.

245, 235, ok so only 10mm difference, just out of curiosity does anyone know of any issues having the wider tyres on will create, silly things like:

Rubbing when on full lock?

Will it chuck up any fault codes or anything else I may have not have thought of?

Kev mentioned fuel economy earlier on, does anyone reading this know, yep it did make a difference to the fuel consumption?
Honest answers now guys if something is crap, I tell it like it is as it may save some other poor sod wasting their money?

To recap I was thinking of fitting Goodyear Vector 4 Season G3 but does anyone know how the Michelin Cross climate 2 compares?

The website may be a little off with regards to accuracy... it happens.

A 245 tyre wouldn't cause any rubbing, not what I'm aware of anyway and it wouldn't throw any fault codes. One additional benefit to having a wider tyre is it provides a little more cushioning for the alloy against kerbs. The 245's were an option on the V70 cars up until 2014 - From then on, they used 235's. That's probably why your B pillar sticker says 235's.

From a general perspective, narrower tyres have less of a rolling resistance, which in turn helps with fuel economy and can also help with sound. I don't know the exact reason why Volvo changed the tyre size, but my guess (its only a guess) is for fuel economy reasons.

Being honest, I haven't compared mpg figures between a 235 width tyre and a 245, so I can't say for sure whether there is any difference. If there was, I wouldn't think it would be too significant based on it being a heavy car with a big engine. Its not going to be "great" on fuel anyway. Marginal improvement maybe??? Can't be sure on that. Maybe someone else will know.

Personally, I'd just go with what's stamped on the B pillar with regards to what size tyre to go for. You can't go wrong with that and it'll keep the insurance company happy.

Simboc has experience of Michelin Cross climates. According to a post he made earlier in this thread, they were good in mud and frost, but not as good on dry/warm roads and a little noisy. I've not had all season tyres on my car, but I've had Michelin summer tyres. I also found those to be noisy and a bit hard... maybe the rubber was harder than other brands? They didn't wear that well either, despite the tyre pressures being fine and the alignment. I got rid of them when they were too worn for my liking and swapped to Bridgestone.

Regarding the door sticker...

Here in Germany, rules are super strict and you can't do what people in the UK are allowed. Not even half as much. BUT the sticker in the door jam is technically the common sizes the car comes with. Mine was available with 245s but the stocker doesn't say it...

No, you won't have any rubbing with 245s. Even without the steering limiters Volvo says have to be fitted with 245 width tires. Even lowered there is no worried (my V70 has factory ET55 rims with 8" width with the 245/40R18 and is also lowered by 30 mm. Even before lowering there was no rubbing).

I wouldn't be so worried, especially as it is all proven and there are no issues in that sense. The only thing POSSIBLY required - depending on tire size currently dialled into the ECU, is a new software to adjust the speedo so it doesn't show too little.

Fellas

Thank you so much for your input its much appreciated.

There’s a deal on with National Tyres at the moment, 15% off a set of 4 Goodyears, I think I’ll give them a try in a 235 size and see how they go.

I haven’t driven on low profile tyres before so I will find out how they go for comfort, mind you given the state the UK roads are in I don’t think it will much matter what tyres are on the car.
In order to avoid being shaken to pieces we will all have to become experts in avoiding the craters if we can or at least try and miss as many as possible.

Thanks again guys

Driving at 125 mph, the slightest defect or height difference in concrete slabs, will hit more than a pothole on UK roads. People worry too much. If you have a broken rim after hitting a pothole, you'll find any rim will have bent/broken

I have used both cross contact and goodyears and I think the goodyears just have the edge in my opinion
