Default B5254T head gasket replacement questions

I apparently was in the wrong forum so I am starting over trying to get some information about changing the head gasket on a 2006 xc70.

I have the head largely disconnected and I have the tool to lock the camshafts in place but I am worried about whether the tool will hold the camshafts in place when I actually go to lift the camshaft cover off.

Right now the camshaft gear marks are in line with the marks on the plastic cover and the crankshaft pulley locater pin is at the one o'clock mark. I have marked them all with white paint. If I lock the camshafts in place with the locking tool can I then go ahead and lift the top?

I was following an excellent procedure for the B42 engine and the writer recommended marking the shafts and the gears on the inside with paint splotches. But I cannot get a paint brush or anything else for that matter into the gap between the pulleys and the engine. Is there a good procedure available for the B5254T engine somewhere? I am a pretty marginal shadetree mechanic.
