Post 1986 cars were fitted with dim-dip and this means that a single-filament lamp is used; 1981-86 cars use a 5/21W dual-filament lamp and holder.

The problem is possibly with the holder if the problem is intermittent. Take the assembly out, remove the bulb itself, clean and GENTLY bend the terminals in so they make better contact and see what happens.
