Good news!

The "new to me" BMS sensor cured it all. It's a shame I didn't try that before replacing the pain-to-get-at support battery.

Used sensor was £25 off Ebay, and a 5 minute fit.

Ran another BMS reset, cleared the archive codes. wipers now work, stop start reports to be online.

Happy Mrs.

Edit: it's also worth noting that even with a dead BMS sensor, the main battery does seem to charge and maintain charge via alternator regulation .. good to know.
