4WD will get you going on the flat, but you're then in a two-tonne brick with pretty much zero control.

With winter tyres the D5 is an awesome snow monster provided the snow isn't deeper than the front bumper. I had winters on 20 inch wheels on mine and it was like there was no snow at all.
THis.... 4x4 or some hybrid modern pretend set up with road tyres or a front wheel drive car and good all season /winter tyres is a very easy decision .Tyres create grip .
