I had the same problem and solved it by replacing the potentiometer (Piher 5k linear). Costs € 0,5 and less than 1 hour work (with the right soldering tools). The only (minor) problem is that the original potentiometer is volvo specific. With the standard potentiometer "Auto" is equal to "0". This means that you can manually choose the fan speed, but the auto speed control is not there any more.
