Agreed. It's also quite common for many of the modern Vag brand crap to block the matrix and over heat.
The water flow goes through the matrix to the back of the thermostat providing the heat to open the stat, when the matrix blocks the stat won't open and the heat rises heating the head more than the block.
If I was the OP I'd bypass the matrix and take it a run
