I've seen a lot of smokers and colour is confusing. Firstly it depends a lot on the light conditions and secondly if the engine has been warmed up fully.
White only: Oil if warm, steam if cold, but can be both.
Black only: Excess fuel burn. Glow plugs or Carbon deposits if cold, overloading or turbo oil seals etc if warm.
Grey or Blue: Difficult, as might be more than one cause.
