I'm not at all knowledgeable about cars and I feel that I'm being fobbed off by a mechanic who possibly feels he is doing me a favour by not wracking up bills, but I need my car to run and be safe and reliable.

It will be cheaper in the long run to take it to the volvo dealer who has 16 years experience with this engine and it's faults ...
