The XC would prove to be a safe and comfortable tow vehicle
That all makes a lot of sense and of course it’s your decision.

The auto as you no doubt know is the Aisan Warner as fitted to toyotas and Lexus etc and capable of intergalactic mileages with ease. However volvo, unlike Toyota sold the auto with a sealed for life myth whereas Toyota had a service interval.

With fluid changes (£75 quid a pop and done on the drive with ease - don’t even jack it up!) every 75k they generally last forever whereas your manual has an expensive dual mass flywheel.

Also bear in mind any of the euro 5s are out as they didn’t sell with a manual period and that you will have no choice of anything. A quick check on autotrader reveals 388 mk1 XC90 of which 373 are auto. The remaining 15 available (across the entire united kingdom) are almost all active or S models so that’s electric windows with half cloth interior and basically nothing else).

Good luck with your search just don’t rule out the very very reliable, efficient and good autos.
