I had a case of oil leaking from the rocker cover a few years ago. The oil dripped onto the exhaust manifold & caused an awful pong.
This was tracked (via Paul Clifton) to being a blocked Positive Crankcase Ventilation system.
Like you, when I took the bellows off my plate was covered in gunk. Since clearing the PCV pipes & replacing the rocker gasket I've not had any more problems.
May be worth checking your PCV IF the oil/gunk does return.
