These lumps will also run on waste oil /veg which will be easier to come by than any synthetic / homebrew petrol substitute.

That may be a pretty good plan. A friend of mine ran a Landrover diesel on used vegetable oil from the Chinese takeaway some years ago. It worked fine except the exhaust fumes smelled of egg foo young with mushroom sauce.
