I've never heard of the filter needing changing - it never occured to me in over 400,000 miles in my Torslanda.
I bet that would have been full of debris, it is a serviceable item that needs changing every few years ideally, the two filters on my 360 were clogged with debris when I changed them, they were the original ones from 1986 too and I changed them about two years ago.

I changed the one on my 940 and that had been replaced recently by a previous owner as it was an aftermarket one and looked like new on the outside but it still had debris inside of it.
